Types Of Bulbs

This web page provides images and descriptions of the different types of bulbs for ‘main’ (primary) domestic and commercial lighting.

The information on this webpage is part of the Judge Electrical ‘Go Green – Save Money’ campaign.

Types Of Bulbs

CFL Bulb - Screw Cap - Image

CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) Bulb – Screw Cap

The image on the left shows a CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulb with a ‘screw cap’ – the fitting is ‘screw type’.

A CFL bulb will save about  £11.68 (GBP) per year on an electricity bill if it is used to replace a 100W standard incandescent light bulb or about £7 if used to replace a standard 60W bulb.

Typical CFL Bulb Savings

A CFL bulb will last about 10 times as long as a standard incandescent light bulb. CFL bulb lifespan is about 10,000 hours; a standard light bulb has a life span of about 1000 hours..

Standard Incandescent Bulb - Screw Cap - Image

The image on the left shows a ‘standard’ incandescent light bulb with a ‘screw cap’ – the fitting is ‘screw type’.

Incandescent  is a general term to describe the generation of light by heating a material.

The filament of an incandescent light bulb is heated by electricity, the hot filament emits light.

The image on the left shows a CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulb with a ‘bayonet cap’ – the fitting is ‘bayonet type’.

CFLs come with standard fittings and can directly replace ‘standard’ incandescent light bulbs.

‘Standard’ incandescent light bulbs produce light immediately; the ‘start time’ of CFL light bulbs is perceptible to the human eye.

Standard Incandescent Light Bulb – Bayonet Cap

The image on the left shows a ‘standard’ incandescent light bulb with a ‘bayonet cap’ – the fitting is ‘bayonet type’.

Screw and bayonet caps are the 2 most popular type of light fitting; screw and bayonet make up about 99% of  UK ‘main’ (primary) light fittings.

The European Union want to phase out the sale of incandescent light bulbs on ‘green’ grounds.

LED Light Bulb (Screw Cap) - Image

LED Light Bulb – Screw Cap

The image on the left shows a LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulb with a ‘screw cap’ – the fitting is ‘screw  type’.

LED light bulbs can NOT directly replace standard incandescent or CFL light bulbs. LED light bulbs use a lower voltage than incandescent and CFL bulbs.

The supply voltage to an LED light bulb needs ‘stepping down’ (reduced) by means of a transformer or ‘ballast’.

‘Ballast’ is an electrical device that controls the voltage and current supply to a series of lights.

The life span of LED light bulbs is about 5 times that of CFL bulbs and 50 times that of standard incandescent light bubs.

LED light bulbs, unlike CFL light bulbs, are mercury free.

As of 2009, LED light bulbs are a relatively new technology. Future research will bring down price and enable LED light bulbs to directly replace CFL and standard incandescent light bubs.
