Armoured Cable – specially protected electrical cable, often used outside (sheds, garages, ponds etc) or in harsh environments.
BSI – British Standards Institute.
Chase – for instance ‘chase the wiring’ – the act of cutting a groove into a surface, for instance a wall, to put wire into.
Conduit – plastic tube that protects electrical wiring. Conduit comes in different shapes, for instance round or square tubing.
Consumer Unit – an electrical distribution unit that has RCD protection devices. A unit that splits an electrical supply up. Sometimes, incorrectly, called a ‘fuse box’ or ‘fuse board’.
Elecsa – a company that assesses and certifies electrical contractors.
Electrical Test and Inspection – testing of electrical installations, inspection of electrical installations, to ensure they are safe. Electrical Test and Inspection information.
Estimate – a rough approximation of the cost of a job.
Fittings – minor electrical items that are the ‘public face’ of an electrical circuit, for instance light switches, sockets, dimmer switches and light fitments.
NAPIT – National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers.
NICEIC – pronounced ’Nicky’ – an electricians trade association – National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting.
‘Part P’ – Part P of Schedule 1 of the Building Regulations (England and Wales). Part P deals with electrical regulations.
PAT Testing – the testing of portable appliances, for instance P.C.s, toasters and kettles, to ensure that they are safe to use at a place of employment.
Quote – an agreement on how much a job will cost.
RCD – Residual Current Device – an electrical safety device that removes the supply to a circuit.
Rewire – replacing some or all the electrical wiring of a house.
Spur – a branch of an electrical circuit.
