All Radiators Upstairs (OR Downstairs) Cold

· Bleed the radiators – fixes many central heating problems.

· No water whilst bleeding the radiators – is the hole in the bleed mechanism blocked? Carefully remove the bleed mechanism and clean the bleed mechanism.

· Problem is usually the pump.

· The pump does not have enough power (‘umph’) to pump the water round the system – the pump either needs replacing or is ‘on the way out’.

· The pump may be stuck, this often happens after the central heating system has been off for a long time – give the pump a ‘love tap’ (a gentle tap with a hammer) – this may free the pump. The pump will be near the boiler.

· There should be an inspection cover on the side of the pump – remove the cover and see if the spindle is rotating. If the spindle is not rotating turn the shaft with a screwdriver to free the spindle.

· Increase the pressure setting on the pump – most central heating pumps have a range of settings. The pump will be near the boiler.

· Turn the radiators off that are working, this will concentrate the central heating pressure towards the radiators that are not working.

· If the radiators heat up, bleed the air out (‘bleed’ the radiators) – start with the radiator nearest the boiler.

· No water whilst bleeding the radiators – is the hole in the bleed mechanism blocked? Carefully remove the bleed mechanism and clean the bleed mechanism.

· Check the water level in the feed and expansion tanks, they should be about one third full. Seek advice to confirm the exact water level.

· Refill the tank by moving the float arm valve down, similar to a toilet cistern.

· Does moving the tank float arm valve fill the tank? Does water enter the tank when the float arm is moved? If not, the float valve could be faulty.

Some Radiators Upstairs (OR Downstairs) Cold

· ‘Balance’ the central heating system. Some central heating pumps do not have enough power to supply all radiators in an house. Have you recently added radiators to the central heating system? Balancing a central heating system is distributing the hot water the pump produces more evenly.

· Bleed the radiators.

· Increase the pressure setting on the pump – most central heating pumps have a range of settings. The pump will be near the boiler.

This webpage contains advice and help to solve the central heating problem of ‘hot radiators upstairs but not downstairs’ (or vice versa).

Which radiators are hot and which are cold depends on the installation of the central heating system.

The information below applies whether the radiators are working upstairs or downstairs.
