Different Types Of Electrical Testing And What They Test

The ‘electrics’ of a business or residence can be split into two types:

· Electrics that don’t move and are not portable – they ‘come with’ the business or residence. For instance RCD domestic units, fuse boxes, the wiring.

· What is fixed is often called the ‘fixed installation’.

· Electrics that can move; they are portable – for instance PC’s, kettles, workshop test equipment.

· Electrics that can move are often called ‘portable appliances’.

If a business or resident moved they would take the portable equipment (appliances) with them but not the fixed equipment.

PAT Testing

PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) testing is the testing of portable appliances, for instance P.C.s, toasters and kettles, to ensure that they are safe to use.

Employers should carry out PAT testing in all places of work that have portable appliances, even if the appliances are only for hire or loan.

All landlords, for instance ’buy to let’ and owners of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO), should do PAT testing before each new let and at regular intervals after that.

Electrical Test And Inspection

Electrical test and inspection checks the ‘fixed installation’ of a small business or residence; for instance wiring, earth connections and junction boxes.

Electrical test and inspection checks the part of the electrics that can’t be moved; PAT testing checks the electrics that can be moved (portable).

The term ‘fixed electrical installations’ is often shortened to ‘electrical installations’.

Electrical testing uses test equipment to check (test) electrical installations; electrical inspection is a physical (visual) check of electrical installations.

Electrical testing uses test equipment to detect faults in an electrical installation, for instance poor earthing and circuit overload.

Electrical inspection ensures, for instance, that warning labels are present and there is no wiring corrosion.

Who Should Do The Different Types Of Electrical Testing

PAT Testing

A ‘competent person’ should do PAT Testing.

A competent person is a person who is competent in the safe use of electrical equipment and can understand the PAT test results.

The Judge Electrical Limited advice is that a ’competent person’ is an experienced electrician who is trained in using PAT testing equipment.

Electrical Test And Inspection

The Judge Electrical Limited opinion is that all electrical test and inspections should be done by a qualified and experienced electrician.
