What Is A Heating Element?
A heating element changes electrical energy into heat.
In common terms a heating element is an electric water heater.
A heating element:
· Heats water in central heating systems.
· Heats water in central heating cylinders (sometime called ‘water cylinders’).
· Heats the ‘ring’ in electric cookers.
The image below shows a heating element from a central heating cylinder.

The heating element slides into the central heating cylinder; the gasket prevents water leaks from the heating element.
What Can Go Wrong With A Heating Element
What can go wrong with a heating element:
· The metal heating element corrodes and does not heat water efficiently.
· The electrics inside the heating element break and do not provide power to the metal heating element.
You cannot repair a heating element. Heating elements cost about £10, replace the element.
