DVM (Digital Volt Meter)

A DVM has:

· A display (shows the results of a measurement).

· A mode select switch – selects the unit of measurement, for instance DC volts, AC volts and resistance.

· The image above has a rotary mode select switch.

· Test leads.

What Is A DVM Used For?

A DVM is used for measuring voltages, current and resistance.

An electrician may use a DVM to check whether a voltage is there or whether a fuse has blown.

A DVM is used to gather information on a problem (fault finding) – has the fuse blown? Is there power at the light switch? Is the switch working?

How To Use A DVM

To use a DVM:

· Select the correct mode – for instance DC Volts, AC Volts or resistance.

· Put the probes onto where you want to measure.

The image below shows a DVM being used to check a fuse.
