Domestic Electricity Bills – Facts And Figures

· Fridges and freezers make up about 33% of domestic electricity bills.

 

· Lighting makes up about 10 to 15% of domestic electricity bills.

 

· Electric water heating systems – heating water makes up about 10 to 15% of domestic electricity bills.

 

· CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) light bulbs use about half the electricity of normal light bulbs.

 

· Older type T12 fluorescent tubes (38mm / 1.5" diameter) use about 8% more electricity than newer T8s (26mm / 1" diameter) fluorescent tubes.

 

· Heating costs rise by about 8% for every degree centigrade increase in thermostat setting – this can save the average household £80 per year.

 

· Domestic households could save 30% on their energy bills by implementing simple, readily available, changes (UK National Audit Office).

 

· Appliances that create or remove heat use the most electricity.

· An electric cooker cost about 75 pence per hour.

 

· A portable fan costs about 20 pence (UK) per hour.

 

· An iron costs about 20 pence (UK) per hour.
