Electrical Plug Hot

What Cause An Electrical Plug To Get Hot?

Whatever the cause of an electrical plug getting hot, a hot plug is a potentially dangerous problem.

The cause of a hot plug can be the plug or the socket.

Possible causes of a hot electrical plug:

  • Frayed wiring inside the plug or socket.
  • Loose connection inside the plug or socket.
  • Fault with the electrical appliance.
  • Corrosion inside the plug or socket.
  • Poor connection inside the plug or socket.
  • Wire size inside socket too small (can’t carry the current).
  • Incorrect fuse in electrical appliance (typical fuse ratings).

What To Do When An Electrical Plug Gets Hot

  • Unplug the electrical appliance.
  • Anything obviously wrong with the plug, socket, power lead or electrical appliance?
  • Find out whether the problem is the socket or the plug.
    • Plug another appliance into the same socket – does this plug get hot? If yes the problem is the electrical socket.
    • Plug the appliance into another socket – does the plug get hot? If yes, the problem is the electrical appliance.
  • If the problem is with the electrical appliance replace the plug and try again.
    • If the same problem happens replace the appliance.
  • If the problem is the electrical socket either call an electrician or investigate the problem.
