Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV)

This web page answers the questions:

  • What is a Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV)?
  • What does a TRV do?
  • How does a TRV control the temperature of a room?

What Is A Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV)?

A Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) is part of a radiator.

The image below shows a TRV.

What Does A TRV Do?

A TRV controls the flow of water to the radiator.

Controlling the flow of water to a radiator controls the amount of heat given off by a radiator.

Controlling the amount of heat given off by a radiator controls the temperature of a room.

Increasing the flow of water through a radiator increases the temperature of a room.

How Does A TRV Control The Temperature Of A Room?

A TRV consists of a thermostat and a valve – the thermostat controls the valve – the valve controls the amount of water flowing through a radiator.

A TRV has settings – usually 1 to 5. The settings change the settings of the thermostat.

Turning the thermostat up increases, and regulates, the flow of water through the valve and hence through the radiator.
